PORT LOUIS (Reuters) - Tourist arrivals in Mauritius dropped by 3.8 percent in January, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority said in a statement on Monday.

"The slowdown in the number of tourist arrivals is mainly due to economic downturn in our main markets," the agency said.

The Indian Ocean Island estimates tourist arrivals last year increase by 2.6 percent to 930,456 from 906,971 in 2007.

The Bank of Mauritius estimates gross receipts from the industry were 41.2 billion rupees in 2008.

At the end of December, there were 102 registered hotels in operation in Mauritius, with a total room capacity of 11,488. The average room occupancy rate for all hotels was 68 percent.
