Workers to march at Eskom, won't affect power supply

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Three hundred members of South Africa's miners union will demonstrate at utility Eskom's headquarters over various grievances on Thursday, but it won't disrupt electricity supply, the union said on Wednesday.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), which represents workers at Eskom , said some members would march to demand the company stop outsourcing workers at Eskom and against potential job losses at Eskom's finance unit, which is being disposed of as part of a plan to sell off non-core assets.

The union also wants Eskom to stop hiring temporary workers, and keeping them in that capacity for years.

"We want to stop the decay that is taking place at Eskom where over 60 percent of personnel are temporary," said Marcus Matabane, the NUM's branch secretary at Eskom.

"Not at all," he said, when asked if the march would interrupt power supply.

Eskom officials were unavailable to comment.

Eskom provides 95 percent of the country's power.
